Your summer may already be booked. That doesn't mean Europe has to wait. Spend two unforgettable weeks over Winter Break living and learning in London and Paris. Earn six credits. Explore two of Europe's greatest cities with a small group of students and faculty. And begin the new year somewhere far more interesting than your dorm room.
Two Cities in the Winter
For two winter weeks, you won't just visit London and Paris. You'll live inside them. London in January: early darkness, wet streets, pubs glowing against the cold, museums filled with people who changed the way we see the world. Then Paris: winter light on the Seine, cafés buzzing against the cold, galleries and museums offering refuge, and streets that have witnessed revolution, art, war, and reinvention. Somewhere between the two, you cross the Channel. There is no ordinary campus routine to retreat to. You begin the year somewhere else—with new people, in unfamiliar streets, moving between two of the great laboratories of modern life.
One Class You'll Never Forget
MADNESS: Psychology, Genius, and the Modern Self. 6 Credits
There are no lecture halls. Instead, you'll time-hop across four centuries, beginning with Leonardo da Vinci and his attempts to understand how thoughts and emotions moved from the mind to the human face. Then your learning will take you into the shadows of Whitechapel, where Jack the Ripper became the world's first modern, media-driven serial killer, before tracing Virginia Woolf's London and exploring shell shock, trauma, and the changing understanding of the human mind. Next, you'll cross the Channel to Paris and follow the history of psychology and social identity from the French Revolution to the Nazi Occupation. Along the way, you'll meet the young Sigmund Freud at the Salpêtrière, and other pioneers in the history of Psychology. You'll stand before the Mona Lisa and assess how well Leonardo managed to map interior sentiments onto a face. Finally, you'll explore the lives of Monet, Van Gogh, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and others who struggled to transform psychological suffering, addiction, mental illness, and the ruptures of modern life into art.
